The basic Competitive Intelligence process has six main components:1) Needs assessment:
Identifying, linking and prioritizing key corporate goals, objectives and
decisions with systematic competitive intelligence activities.
2) Access:
Collecting and managing the information required to achieve process objectives through primary sources (such as your internal staff,
sales force, customers and external experts) and secondary sources (print and web-based publications).
3) Assess
The use of tools and technologies to create intelligence from raw information.
4) Deliver
Creating the deliverables and communicating intelligence results to those who can take action on it in a meaningful timeframe. Remember, if the intelligence is not sufficiently actionable to be
acted upon, in terms of either content, relevance or timeliness, the effort is useless.
5) Act
The initiative taken by the user of intelligence to consider and take action on intelligence
reports.
6) Measure
Defining internal measures to indicate the effectiveness of competitive activities and feeding those measures and outcomes into the intelligence process to ensure ongoing linkage of
activities to the achievement of corporate competitive objectives, be they strategic or tactical.
